After graduating from Cambridge University, he served as a member of the Cavendish Laboratory (1920), a professor at the University of London (24), a professor at Cambridge University (36), and vice-chancellor of the University of Edinburgh (49). He is known for his contributions to research on wireless communication, radio wave propagation, and the ionosphere, and is particularly known for discovering the F layer, which plays an important role in reflecting radio waves. His research made it possible to transmit radio waves more reliably over a wider area. During World War II, he was involved in the development research of radar and the atomic bomb.
