[Died] April 21, 1965. Edinburgh. British physicist. After graduating from Cambridge University, he served as a member of the Cavendish Laboratory (1920), a professor at the University of London (24), a professor at Cambridge University (36), and vice-chancellor of the University of Edinburgh (49). He is known for his contributions to research on wireless communication, radio wave propagation, and the ionosphere, and is particularly known for discovering the F layer, which plays an important role in reflecting radio waves. His research made it possible to transmit radio waves more reliably over a wider area. During World War II, he was involved in the development research of radar and the atomic bomb. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1947.

A city in eastern Wisconsin, USA. It is located on the banks of the Fox River, an outflow river from Lake Winnebago. Its development was triggered by the establishment of Lawrence University in 1847. The first hydroelectric power plant in the USA was built in 1882. Today, its main industries are paper, lumber, and agricultural equipment manufacturing. Population 65,695 (1990).
