[Pain pathway]
In 1877, British neurologist William R. Gowers (1845-1915) made a crucial discovery regarding the pathway of pain conduction through the spinal cord to the brain. He examined a patient who had attempted suicide with a pistol and suffered a cervical fracture, and discovered that the patient had completely lost pain and sensation of heat and cold on the left side of his body, but had no abnormalities in his sense of touch.
