A Chinese custom that refers to crying loudly in grief over the death of a person. It was formalized as a funeral ritual, and the way of crying, the number of times, and the place differed depending on the closeness of the blood relationship with the deceased. Sometimes hired mourners, mourners, male wailing servants, or female wailing maids were added to make the mourning. In Korea, there is a similar custom of the chief mourner and close relatives crying out "Aigou" at the funeral, beside the coffin. The Korean word "Aigou" is an exclamation used when one is in great pain, sad, exerts himself, is surprised, is unable to bear the pain, or is cornered.
