Atavism - Atavism

A phenomenon in which a trait that existed in an ancestor appears in its descendants over generations. Examples of this phenomenon are often seen, such as the segregation of a recessive trait in the second generation of hybrid _F2 , or the appearance of a sex-linked trait in a grandson, skipping the father-daughter generation. For this reason, although it is widely used in society, it is not used as a technical term in genetics due to its lack of strictness. It is sometimes used as a synonym for atavism, but it is a slightly different concept.

祖先にあった形質が世代を隔てて子孫に現れる現象。第二代雑種F₂における劣性形質の分離の場合や、伴性形質が父から娘の代を飛び越えて孫息子に現れる場合など、その実例はしばしばみかけられる。そのため、社会的には広く通用しているが、厳密性を欠くために遺伝学の専門用語としては用いられない。先祖返りの同義語として用いられる場合もあるが、やや概念的に異なっている。
