Repellent substance (English spelling)

Japanese: 忌避物質 - きひぶっしつ（英語表記）repellent

Substances produced by living organisms that act to inhibit the feeding or egg-laying behavior of animals. In particular, the term is often used to refer to substances that cause insects to avoid organisms that contain the substance when selecting an egg-laying site or food. Insects must correctly select specific hosts when selecting an egg-laying site for their adult stage and when selecting food for their larval development. One mechanism that ensures that adult insects select certain hosts to lay eggs is the egg-laying stimulant (attractant) contained in the host, but this is further reinforced by the repellent substances contained in plants and insects other than the host that inhibit egg-laying behavior.

生物体がつくる物質のうち，動物の摂食行動や産卵行動を抑制する働きをもつもの。特に昆虫の産卵場所の選択，食物選択において，その物質が含まれる生物を避けるように作用する物質を指して使われることが多い。昆虫は，成虫期の産卵場所の選択と，幼生期の発育のための食物選択において，特定の寄主を正しく選ぶ必要がある。成虫がある一定の寄主を選んで産卵することを保証されている機構として，寄主に含まれる産卵刺激物質(誘引物質)があるが，さらに寄主以外の植物，昆虫に含まれる忌避物質が産卵行動を阻害することによっていっそう強化されている。
