The Casta War - The Casta War

Japanese:
The Casta War - The Casta War
An Indian rebellion led by the Maya that swept across Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula from 1847. The name casta is Spanish for "hierarchy" among ethnic groups. Triggered by the expansion of sugar plantations to the eastern and southern Yucatan Peninsula, it gradually developed into an indigenous movement calling for the creation of an independent Maya kingdom. By the middle of the following year, nearly four-fifths of the peninsula was under their control. Meanwhile, some ruling elites who wanted independence for the Yucatan Peninsula sought annexation to the United States, but the British military of British Honduras countered by supporting the rebels. In the fall of 1849, the situation turned around with the introduction of a large number of Mexican troops and the assassination of the leaders. In 1853, one group agreed to a ceasefire, but the other two groups continued fighting until 1901.
