Sagami Bay - Sagami Bay

Japanese:
Sagami Bay - Sagami Bay

This refers to the sea area between a line that runs from the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture through Oshima to the southern tip of the Boso Peninsula, and a line that connects Manazuru Misaki in Kanagawa Prefecture to the southern tip of the Miura Peninsula (Jogashima). A 1,500-2,000 meter deep sea channel can be seen from the eastern part of Oshima toward the mouth of the Sakawa River, and this underwater topography continues to the Japan Trench in the eastern part of the Izu Islands. From a broader perspective, this corresponds to the Sagami Trough, which is related to the Fossa Magna that runs southeast through the center of Honshu, and the seafloor displacement caused by the Great Kanto Earthquake is also said to have been caused by the activity of the Sagami Trough in this tectonic zone. A branch of the Kuroshio Current flows in between the Izu Peninsula and Oshima, and flows out into the Pacific Ocean off Nojimazaki. Yellowtail fixed net fishing is carried out on the east coast of the Izu Peninsula, and there are many fishermen from Hokuriku and other areas. There are many good fishing grounds for offshore fishing in the southwestern coast of Boso (Chiba Prefecture) and around Oshima, and fishing boats are also sent out from the Miura Peninsula. In addition to regular ferries that run from Keihin and Izu (Atami and Ito) to Oshima, there are many domestic and international cargo ships operating there.
