...The person who helped publish "Moshihogusa" was Mogami Tokunai, who himself learned the Ainu language. The Leiden University Library in the Netherlands has a copy of "Ezoshima Language Yezogasima Kotoba" (manuscript) co-edited by Tokunai and Siebold. Outside of Japan, the oldest work is "Sakhalin Ainu Vocabulary" (unpublished) edited by the Russian naval officer Gavriil I. Davydov (1784-1809). In Japan, this editor, Davydov, is known as a troublemaker who attacked the islands of Etorofu and Rishiri on a Russian ship together with Khvostov in 1807. ...
