A butterfly belonging to the family Hesperiidae in the order Lepidoptera of the class Insecta. It is widely distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is common in the Kanto region and north, but is generally rare in southwestern Japan. It has been recorded from the Korean Peninsula, northeastern China, and Taiwan, but whether it is the same species as the Japanese one requires further investigation. It resembles the common Japanese Skipper, but is easily distinguished by its long antennae compared to its overall size, and the white spots on its hindwings are not regularly arranged in a line like the Japanese Skipper, but are shifted alternately. In cold regions, it appears once a year in July and August, but in warm regions it appears twice a year (June and July, August and October), and a third generation can sometimes be seen in autumn. The larvae usually feed on bamboo, silver grass, Japanese silvergrass, reeds, and rice. They overwinter as larvae. [Takashi Shiramizu] ©Shogakukan "> Major species of Hesperiidae (3) [Specimens...
