A region in central Italy facing the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas. Its capital is Florence. It is mountainous, with narrow plains in the Arno River valley and on the coast. It produces wheat, wine (Chanti is famous for it), olives, walnuts, and other products, as well as iron ore from Elba and marble from Carrara. Industries include shipbuilding in Livorno, woolen textiles in Prato, and ironworks in Biombio. An area inhabited by the ancient Etruscans, it was part of the Roman Empire in the 3rd century BC, and part of the Frankish Empire from the 8th to 11th centuries. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Florence became the center of Renaissance culture under the rule of the Medici family. It became the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in the late 16th century, and was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1860, becoming part of Italy. Its area is 22,997 km2 . 3,672,202 people (2011).
