To execute a switched connection in a telecommunications network, various control signals must be exchanged between the terminal and the switch, and between switches. The arrangements and methods for sending and receiving these signals are called signaling systems. Figure 1 shows the basic flow of signals in a telephone network. Signals exchanged between the telephone and the switch include call-in signals and recovery signals that notify the user when the handset is hung up or hung up, selection signals (dial pulses or multi-frequency codes for push-button phones) that send dial digits, and answering and calling signals that send dial tones and ringing bells.

電気通信網において交換接続を実行するためには，端末機と交換機の間，交換機と交換機の間においていろいろな制御信号のやりとりが必要である。この信号送受に関する取決めや方法を信号方式という。　図1は電話網における基本的な信号の流れを示したものである。電話機と交換機の間には送受話器の上げ下ろしを知らせる発呼信号や復旧信号，ダイヤル数字を送る選択信号(ダイヤルパルスやプッシュホンの多周波符号)，発信音や呼出電鈴音を送る応答信号や呼出信号などがやりとりされる。
