...Zanuck, who was a Republican but also a close friend of President Roosevelt, had a strong interest in social service, and even filmed the final scene in which Tom Joad's mother (Academy Award-winning actress Jane Darwell) says, "The people don't die" after he leaves his family. The title of "The Grapes of Wrath" comes from the first stanza of "The Republic Hymn" (1862) by JW Howe, an American female poet who wrote about the Civil War. Steinbeck originally planned to write this not as a novel, but as a kind of "photojournalism" book on the theme of the poor people called "Okies" who were migrating from Oklahoma to California. This is also the basis for the claim that the documentary style of this novel was influenced by the works of Per Lorentz (The Plow That Breaks the Plains, 1936, The River, 1937, etc.), a leading American documentary filmmaker and a friend of Steinbeck, and in fact Steinbeck was delighted when he saw the finished film, saying, "It's like watching a documentary."
