A town in Kahoku County in central Ishikawa Prefecture, located between the Sea of Japan and the Kahoku Lagoon. Agriculture and fishing were not doing well, so from the mid-Meiji period onwards, many people moved to Hokkaido to earn money, and were engaged in scallop fishing in the Sea of Okhotsk. In 1952, the sand dunes were requisitioned for a US military test range, and residents protested (they withdrew in 1957). As it is adjacent to Kanazawa City, it is being developed into a residential area. The town produces rice, radishes, watermelons, and other crops, and the textile industry is thriving. Area: 20.33 km2 . Population: 26,927 (2010). → Related Topics Base Issues Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
