A village in Kasai County, Tokachi Subprefecture, southeastern Hokkaido. Population 4,319 (1995). It occupies the middle and upper reaches of the Satsunai River, a tributary of the Tokachi River, and in the west are the mountains of the Hidaka Mountains, including Mt. Satsunai (1,896m). National Route 236 passes through the area. Development began in 1897, and after the opening of the Hiroo Line in 1929 (now abandoned), the population rapidly increased. Fertile plains stretch along the midstream of the Satsunai River, and it forms part of the upland farming region of the Tokachi Plain. The area was an early adopter of agricultural corporations, and cooperative management, such as the creation of agricultural production complexes, is thriving. 北海道南東部,十勝支庁河西(かさい)郡の村。人口4319(1995)。十勝川支流の札内川中・上流域を占め,西部には札内岳(1896m)をはじめ,日高山脈の山々がそびえる。国道236号線が通じる。1897年から開拓が始まり,1929年の広尾線開通(現在は廃線)後,急速に人口も増加した。札内川中流沿いには肥沃な平地が広がり,十勝平野の畑作地帯の一角をなす。農業の法人化を早くからとり入れ,農業生産の団地化など協業経営が盛んである。
