1888‐1973 Bulgarian author. His real name was Georgi Stojanov Zlatarev. He started out as a symbolist poet, publishing collections of poems such as Visions of the Crossroads (1914), but after experiencing the Balkan Wars and World War I, he gradually shifted to a realist stance. He is best known for his novels The Silver Wedding of Colonel Matov (1933) and Cholera (1935), which depicts the horrors of war. After the establishment of the socialist government, he served as president of the Union of Writers and director of the Institute of Literature at the Academy of Sciences.
