Japanese: 投票 - とうひょう（英語表記）vote

The voter's expression of support or opposition on a certain issue, or the will of the electorate in an election. Examples of expressions of support or opposition include local referendums on territorial sovereignty, national referendums on constitutional amendments, and recall votes. In general, however, the term is used to refer to the voter's expression of intent to select a specific person from a set number of candidates in an election. In Japan, the Constitution guarantees a secret ballot for citizens and residents (Article 15, Clause 4). The method of voting is to be determined by law (Constitution, Article 47), and the Public Offices Election Act stipulates basic principles such as single-vote ballots, one person, one vote, written ballots (however, proxy voting is permitted in certain cases), and voting at polling stations (however, absentee ballots are permitted in certain cases). ある事項に対する構成員の賛否，または選挙における選挙人の意思表示。賛否の意思表示としては領地帰属に対する住民投票，憲法改定の国民投票，リコールの投票などがある。ただし一般には，選挙において有権者が一定数の候補者のなかから特定の人を選出する意思表示をさして用いられることが多い。日本では，国民や住民の投票については，憲法上，秘密投票が保障されている (15条4項) 。投票の方法については法律で定めるものとされ (憲法 47) ，公職選挙法は，単記投票主義，1人1票主義，自書主義 (ただし一定の場合には代理投票を認める) ，投票所投票主義 (ただし一定の場合には不在者投票を認める) などの基本原則を定めている。 (→投票制度 )
