A perennial grass of the grass family. It is found throughout Japan and eastern Asia, growing in clusters in sunny waterside areas such as streams and swamps. The rhizomes grow long stolon branches, and the stems are thick and reach a height of 1-2.5m. The leaves are linear, 40-80cm long and 1-3cm wide. Flowering season is September-October. The inflorescence is 25-40cm long. The spikelets are 5-6mm long, brown, and awnless, with numerous 1.5cm long, silvery-white, shiny, silky hairs at the base. It resembles Miscanthus sinensis, but can be easily distinguished by the different growing locations, the length of the hairs at the spikelet base, and the presence or absence of awns.
