Shiraoka [town] - Shiraoka

Japanese: 白岡[町] - しらおか

A former town in Minami Saitama County, eastern Saitama Prefecture. It is located on a plateau on the east bank of the Moto-Arakawa River, with the Minuma Irrigation Canal flowing southeast through the center. Rice, fruit trees, and horticultural crops are cultivated here. The town is one of the top producers of pears in the prefecture. The Tohoku Main Line runs through the town, and as factories move in, it is becoming a residential area. In October 2012, the town was incorporated as a city, becoming Shiraoka City. Area: 24.88 ^km2 . Population: 50,272 (2010).

埼玉県東部，南埼玉郡の旧町。元荒川東岸の台地上にあり，中部を見沼(みぬま)代用水が南東流する。米，果樹，園芸作物の栽培が盛ん。特にナシの生産量は県内有数。東北本線が通じ，工場進出に伴い住宅地化も進展。2012年10月市制施行，白岡市となる。24.88km²。５万272人（2010）。
