Johannes van den Bosch

1780‐1844
Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1830 to 1833. His name is widely known for the forced cultivation system he adopted in 1830. At the age of 17, he went to Batavia, Java (now Jakarta), and thereafter pursued a career as a professional soldier. In 1810, he returned to Japan and, while working on colonial management, he also wrote a book on colonial management entitled The Dutch Dependencies in Asia, America, and Africa: Their Ideal, Political, Economic, and Geographical Situation (1818).

オランダ領東インド政庁総督。在職1830‐33年。彼の名は，1830年以来採用された強制栽培制度とともに広く知れわたっている。17歳でジャワのバタビア(現，ジャカルタ)に赴き，以後職業軍人としての道を歩んだ。1810年にいったん帰国し，植民地経略についての実務に携わるかたわら，《アジア，アメリカおよびアフリカにおけるオランダ属領――理念的，政治経済的，地理的観点からみたその状況》(1818)と題する植民地経営論を著した。
