1780‐1844 Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1830 to 1833. His name is widely known for the forced cultivation system he adopted in 1830. At the age of 17, he went to Batavia, Java (now Jakarta), and thereafter pursued a career as a professional soldier. In 1810, he returned to Japan and, while working on colonial management, he also wrote a book on colonial management entitled The Dutch Dependencies in Asia, America, and Africa: Their Ideal, Political, Economic, and Geographical Situation (1818).
