The great weather god of the Babylonian and Assyrian pantheons. When Enlil, the lord of the winds, became the god of the earth, Adad took control of thunderstorms instead. Adad has two personalities: a fertility god who brings fertility through wind and rain, and a god who destroys nature with storms, thunder, and floods, bringing darkness and death. Because of these personalities, he was also worshiped as an oracle god with the privilege of evoking the future, along with Shamash. He is called the son of the heavenly god Anu or the son of the earth god Bel. His sacred animals are the bull and the lion, and his symbols are the cypress, and he is depicted riding on the back of a bull and holding a lightning bolt in one hand. His origin was unknown, but recent excavations at Ras Shamra in northern Syria have revealed him to be the supreme god of the Asiatic-speaking peoples.
