Mountaineer. Born in Gunma Prefecture, he dropped out of Tokyo University. He loved mountain climbing from his youth, and joined the Japan Alpine Club in 1913. While editing the journal "Sangaku," he climbed Mt. Yari, Mt. Yakushi, Mt. Tsurugidake, and Mt. Tateyama without a guide together with Tabe Shigeharu (1884-1972). In 1916, he made many climbs in the Chubu region, including a traverse of Mt. Asahi, Mt. Yukikura, Mt. Shirouma, and Harinoki Pass, while studying the Himalayas. He published many mountaineering travelogues and mountain research, which had a great influence on the Japanese mountaineering world. In 1935, he became the third president of the Japan Alpine Club. 登山家。群馬県生れ,東大中退。少年時代から登山を好み,1913年日本山岳会に入会,機関誌《山岳》の編集のかたわら,田部重治〔1884-1972〕とともに案内人なしで槍ヶ岳,薬師岳,劔岳(つるぎだけ),立山に登った。1916年には朝日岳,雪倉岳,白馬岳(しろうまだけ),針ノ木峠を縦走するなど中部地方を多く登山し,かたわらヒマラヤを研究。数多くの山岳紀行や山岳研究を発表し,日本の山岳界に大きな影響を及ぼした。1935年第3代日本山岳会会長。主著に《山の憶ひ出》2巻(1938年,1939年)がある。
