Adat is a Malay word originating from the Arabic ada, meaning "custom," "practice," "traditional order," or "customary law," and is widely used in southern Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the southern Philippines. Its content varies greatly from region to region, but in a broad sense it can be said to be "a model or norm from the past living in the present." In some cases it is written down, but most are passed down orally. Adat is easily perceived as an unchanging tradition as an institution that has supported the communalism of kinship groups and local societies, but in reality it has the flexibility and ambiguity to change consciously or unconsciously.
