Adat is a Malay word originating from the Arabic ada, meaning "custom," "practice," "traditional order," or "customary law," and is widely used in southern Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the southern Philippines. Its content varies greatly from region to region, but in a broad sense it can be said to be "a model or norm from the past living in the present." In some cases it is written down, but most are passed down orally. Adat is easily perceived as an unchanging tradition as an institution that has supported the communalism of kinship groups and local societies, but in reality it has the flexibility and ambiguity to change consciously or unconsciously. 〈慣習〉〈慣行〉または〈伝統的秩序〉〈慣習法〉を意味するアラビア語のアーダを起源とするマレー語で,タイ南部,マレーシア,インドネシア,フィリピン南部に広く使われる。その内容は地域的にひじょうに異なるが,広義には〈現在に生きる過去の範例,規範〉と言える。文書化されている場合もあるが,多くは口承である。アダットは親族集団,地縁社会における共同態主義を支えてきた制度として不変の伝統として受け取られやすいが,実際には意識的,無意識的に変化していく柔軟性とあいまいさとを有している。
