A Christian kingdom formed in central Spain in the 10th century, its name comes from the many castellas (fortresses) that were built in battles against Islamic forces. It was founded by the knight Gonzalez, Margrave of the Kingdom of Leon. It eventually became the center of the Reconquista, annexing the Kingdom of Leon in the 12th century and making Toledo its capital, fighting against Islamic forces in the south. In 1479, the nation-state of the Kingdom of Spain was born under the joint rule of Queen Isabella of Castile and King Ferdinand of Aragon.
