Statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries classify these into the following five types: (1) Joint use organizations in which multiple farmers are bound together by rules regarding the use of machinery and facilities, (2) Collective cultivation organizations that only have a cultivation agreement or that have a cultivation agreement and related joint work and joint use of machinery and facilities, (3) Contracting organizations that are entrusted with agricultural management and full or partial farm work and receive fees for such work, (4) Livestock production organizations in which multiple livestock raising groups or pasture cultivation groups share land such as meadows and pastures, and share machinery and facilities (this includes cases in which prefectures, municipalities, agricultural cooperatives, etc. conduct breeding and joint breeding projects), and (5) Cooperative management organizations in which two or more households jointly invest and jointly manage all aspects of management, from production in one or more agricultural sectors to the sale of products, accounting, and distribution of profits. According to a 1995 survey, there are approximately 241,000 farms participating in production organizations, of which approximately 198,000 are participants in organizations that share machinery and facilities, followed by contract organizations (approximately 57,000).
