Passerine, Flycatcher family. Total length 13cm. Head, back and tail are gray-brown, wings are black-brown, and chest and abdomen are gray-white and plain. Breeds from southern Siberia to northern Mongolia, northeastern China, Sakhalin Island, southern Kuril Islands, Japan, northern India, Himalayas, and western China, and winters in southern China, Southeast Asia, and India. It migrates to Japan as a summer bird (→migratory bird), and inhabits the edges of broadleaf forests and sparse forests in low mountains and flatlands from Kyushu to Hokkaido, as well as garden forests, where it feeds on insects. It builds a bowl-shaped nest like a tree knot on a horizontal branch by binding together lichen, a large amount of moss, feathers, bark, etc. with spider silk. It makes a thin "tsui" sound on the ground and chirps with a complex tone and a husky cry.
