Historical region and former province name in southeastern France. The area extends from the lower Rhône River to the Alps, and corresponds to the five departments of Bouches-du-Rhône, Var, Haute-Provence, Maritimes, and Vaucluse. Except for the Camargue region at the mouth of the Rhône River, most of the area is mountainous. Sheep farming is popular in the mountains, grapes and olives are cultivated in the well-developed river valleys, and intensive farming of vegetables, fruit trees, and flowers is carried out on the Mediterranean coast, taking advantage of the warm climate. Irrigation facilities are well developed in the Durance and Verdon river basins. The coastal area is dominated by a series of tourist and resort cities, centered around the Côte d'Azur, and industry is developed around Marseille. It has been influenced by Greece and Rome since ancient times, and there are many ruins from those times. Major cities include Marseille, Toulon, Nice, Aix-en-Provence, Arles, and Avignon.

The name comes from the fact that this area was the first Provincia (province) of the Roman Empire when it conquered Gaul. The region has had a unique development process in terms of its affiliation, and is characterized by its Provencal language (a Provencal dialect of Occitan) and its customs that share some aspects with Italy and Spain.

The Greeks colonized the area in the 7th century BC, and it flourished during the Roman period. It later belonged to the Frankish Kingdom, the Kingdom of Italy under Lothair, and the Kingdom of Burgundy, but William the Liberator, who repelled Muslims around 973, became the founder of the Counts of Provence. It was part of the Holy Roman Empire in the 11th century, and in the 12th century it was ruled by the Counts of Barcelona of Spain through marriage. In the 13th century it was further added to the County of Anjou through marriage, and after the Count's family, who became kings of Sicily, were driven from the throne by the House of Aragon and returned to Provence, the County of Provence was handed over to King Louis XI of France as a bequest (1481). During this period, a French-style feudal system was established around the 12th century, but the city also saw a remarkable recovery following the Crusades. In 1348, Avignon was sold to Pope Clement VI. Later, during the French Revolution, when the Montagne Faction ruled the National Convention, the area became a stronghold of the Girondists who rebelled against the Convention, but the fall of Marseille and Toulon in 1793 put an end to this resistance.

フランス南東部の歴史的地域名、旧州名。ローヌ川下流からアルプス山脈に至る地域で、現在のブーシュ・デュ・ローヌ、バール、アルプ・ド・オート・プロバンス、アルプ・マリティーム、ボークリューズの5県にあたる。ローヌ川河口のカマルグ地方を除き、大部分は山がちである。山中ではヒツジの飼育が盛んで、よく発達した河谷にはブドウ、オリーブなどが栽培され、地中海海岸部では温暖な気候を利用して野菜、果樹、花卉(かき)の集約的な農業が行われている。デュランス川とベルドン川流域は灌漑(かんがい)水利が発達している。海岸地帯はコート・ダジュールを中心に観光・保養都市が連続し、工業はマルセイユ周辺に発達している。古くからギリシア、ローマの影響を受け、その遺跡が多い。主要都市はマルセイユ、トゥーロン、ニース、エクサン・プロバンス、アルル、アビニョンなど。

歴史

ローマがガリア征服に際してこの地を最初のプロウィンキア（属州）としたのが地名の由来である。この地方は、帰属などをめぐって特異な発展過程をたどり、プロバンス語（オック語のプロバンス方言）をもち、習俗もイタリア、スペインと共通する面があるなどの特徴をもつ。

　紀元前7世紀よりギリシア人が植民し、ローマ時代にも繁栄した。のちフランク王国、ロタールのイタリア王国、ブルゴーニュ王国に属したが、973年ごろイスラム教徒を撃退したウィリアム解放伯がプロバンス伯の始祖となる。11世紀神聖ローマ帝国に属したこともあり、12世紀には婚姻によってスペインのバルセロナ伯の支配を受けた。13世紀にさらに婚姻によりアンジュー伯領に加えられ、シチリア王位についた同伯家がアラゴン家によって王位を追われてプロバンスに帰ったのち、遺贈の形でプロバンス伯領はフランス王ルイ11世に譲られた（1481）。この間12世紀ごろフランス風の封建制が成立していくが、一方十字軍遠征を契機として都市の復興も著しかった。1348年にはアビニョンが教皇クレメンス6世に売却されている。下ってフランス革命下、山岳派独裁の国民公会時代、この地がジロンド派の拠点として公会に反抗したが、1793年マルセイユおよびトゥーロンの陥落でこの抵抗に終止符が打たれた。
