Gregorios Taumatourgos

A Greek Church Father who lived from 213 to 270. He studied under Origen in Caesarea, Palestine. He returned to his hometown of Neocaesarea in Pontus and became bishop there. He fought against heresies such as the Pauline sect in accordance with Origen's theology and contributed to the missionary work in the Cappadocia region. He was nicknamed "Thaumaturges," meaning "miracle worker," and according to later tradition, he performed many amazing miracles during his missionary work. His surviving works include the Confession of Faith, the Commentary on Ecclesiastes, and a letter to Theopompus (translated in Syriac) in which he discusses the inability of God to suffer.

ギリシア教父。パレスティナのカエサレアでオリゲネスに師事。故郷ポントスのネオカエサレアに戻って，同地の主教となり，オリゲネス神学に即してパウロ派などの異端と戦い，カッパドキア地方の宣教に貢献した。呼び名〈タウマトゥルゴス〉は〈奇跡をなす人〉の意で，宣教の過程でさまざまの驚くべき奇跡を行ったとの後代の伝承による。現存する著作として《信仰告白》《伝道書釈義》，神の受苦不能性について論じたテオポンポスあての書簡(シリア語で伝わる)など。
