Japanese: 羽化登仙 - うかとうせん

(To move to the mountains and become a hermit) To sprout wings and fly up to the sky. It is also a metaphor for getting drunk and feeling otherworldly good.

[Explanation] "Emerging" usually refers to an insect's transformation from a chrysalis to an adult and the growth of wings, but here it refers to a person becoming a celestial immortal with the power to ascend to heaven, and growing wings to do so. "Tosen" means becoming a celestial immortal and ascending to heaven, and is based on the Chinese idea of immortality. Nowadays, it is used without such ideological background to mean "feeling like you're ascending to heaven."

[解説] 「羽化」はふつう昆虫について、さなぎから成虫になり、羽が生えることをいいますが、ここでは人が天仙といって天にのぼる力のある仙人となり、そのための羽が生えること。「登仙」はその天仙になり天にのぼることで、中国の神仙思想にもとづいています。現在ではそうした思想の背景なしに、「天にのぼるような気分」の意味に用います。
