A machine that compresses and expels gas in a cylinder by the reciprocating motion of a piston. It consists of a crank mechanism and a piston mechanism, and in the case of a double-acting type, suction and expelling are performed on both sides of the piston, so there are suction valves and expelling valves at the front and rear of the cylinder. There are various types depending on the arrangement and connection style of the cylinders, and multi-stage types are used when the pressure ratio is high. Generally, a small capacity is not necessary, but they are often used in cases where high pressure is required.

ピストンの往復運動によってシリンダ内の気体を圧縮して送り出す機械。クランク機構とピストン機構とから構成され，複動の場合には，ピストンの両側で吸込み，送り出しをするから，シリンダの前後にそれぞれ吸込み弁と送出弁とがついている。シリンダの配置や結合様式により各種のものがあり，圧力比が高い場合には多段式のものが用いられる。一般には容量は小さくてもよいが，高圧力を必要とするような場合に多く用いられる。
