The name of a Japanese percussion instrument. A copper gong. It is likely that it was imported from China as a Buddhist instrument and then became widespread. There are "ibo gongs" with warts on the surface and "hira gongs" with thin edges, and they come in various sizes. The dish-shaped bronze body is hung on a string and struck with a mallet with a pad or a wooden striker. The gong used in Kabuki's Ong-hayashi has a thick edge with a protrusion in the center, and is called "gon" when struck normally, and "dorabuchi" when struck with a long thin mallet. In addition to being used in combination with other instruments, it is used to tell time like a real bell, and is also struck as a signal for the departure of a ship or at a tea ceremony.
