…King of Sweden. Reigned 1611-32. Also called Gustav Adolf. First son of Duke Karl of Sweden. His father fought against Sigismund III of Sweden and Poland (Adolf's cousin) and drove him from Sweden. He became regent (1599) and then king (1604-11). After his death, Adolf, who was not yet 17 years old, inherited the Swedish throne and also conflicts and feuds with Denmark, Russia, and Poland.
