Abbreviation for South Manchuria Railway Co., Ltd. Founded in 1906 to manage part of the Chinese Eastern Railway (Changchun - Port Arthur) and associated interests that Japan acquired during the Russo-Japanese War, this semi-public, semi-private national company was founded by Goto Shinpei, its first president. It diversified into transportation, mining, commerce, and colonization, with railways, Fushun Coal Mine, and Anshan Steel Works at its core. Backed by general administrative authority over the attached territories and the right to garrison troops for security, it became the core of Japan's management of Manchuria. In particular, after the Manchurian Incident, it expanded its influence throughout Manchuria, forming a large conglomerate. With the establishment of the "Manchukuo," the railway division was nationalized and was entrusted to the South Manchuria Railway for management. In 1937, the heavy industry division was transferred to the Manchuria Heavy Industry Development Company, and all assets were confiscated in 1945 after Japan's defeat in the war.

南満州鉄道株式会社の略称。日露戦争で日本の得た東清鉄道の一部（長春〜旅順）と付属利権の経営のため1906年設立された半官半民の国策会社で，初代総裁は後藤新平。鉄道と撫順炭鉱・鞍山製鋼所を中心に交通，鉱工業，商業，拓殖などを多角経営。付属地一般行政権と警備駐兵権を裏付けに日本の満州経営の中核となった。特に満州事変以後全満に勢力を伸張，大コンツェルンを形成。鉄道部門は〈満州国〉成立に伴い同国有とされて，満鉄が委託経営。1937年重工業部門を満州重工業開発に移譲，1945年敗戦により全資産を接収された。
