...People like John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, and Victor McLaglen were affectionately known to fans as "the Ford family." Set against the backdrop of the famous land grab battle in the history of pioneering (the so-called "land rush"), "The Three Villains" (1926) depicts kindhearted ruffians who fight to protect young lovers; "Four Sons" (1928) depicts the tragedy of a German mother who loses her beloved children one by one to the war; "Warriors of Mankind" (1931) depicts the life of a doctor who fights against an infectious disease and loses his beloved wife; "Man's Enemy" (1935) depicts a simple-minded man who sells out his best friend and destroys himself in his desire for freedom during the Irish War of Independence; "The Will Rogers Trilogy," a series of heartwarming, bold comedies filled with humanity, namely "Doctor Bull" (1933), "Judge Priest" (1934), and "The Great Passage" (1935); a film adaptation of Steinbeck's masterpiece "The Grapes of Wrath" (1940); His works include How Green Was My Valley (1941), which depicts the rise and fall of the mountains and the fortunes of a family who lived there; Gunfight No. 1 (1946), renowned as a masterpiece of poetic Western drama; Fort Apache (1948), known as the Cavalry Trilogy, which sometimes seriously and sometimes humorously depict the life of cavalry soldiers on the Western frontier; The Yellow Ribbon (1949); and Forts on the Rio Grande (1950). His works include The Quiet Man (1952), a comical human drama full of Irish temperament; The Searchers (1956), which depicts the journey of a man's obsession, loneliness and hatred in search of a girl stolen by Indians; The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), which depicts the end of the Old West; and Cheyenne (1964), which depicts the tragic migration of a group of Indians back to their homeland, pursued by white people. Ford's film career can be broadly divided into his time as a contract director and his time as an independent director, with the first period spanning from age 22 (1917) to age 51 just after World War II, and the second period spanning from age 52 (1947) to age 71 (1966).
