Fan-bellied

Japanese: 扇腹 - おうぎばら
Fan-bellied
〘 noun 〙 A type of punishment applied to samurai during the Edo period. The samurai would remove the fan that was placed on the sabō (military attendant) instead of a short sword, and the kaishakunin would then cut off his head from behind. ※Jōruri, Shobudaise Sogen (1754), Vol. 2 "When he should have been executed by hanging, his brother Tadamasa, out of compassion, decided to use the fan instead."
