Large Head Picture - Ookubie

A term used in ukiyo-e. A work depicting a beautiful woman, actor, or other person in a bust format. There is also a theory that it is called o-gaoe (large face painting) to distinguish it from works that depict only the face. 浮世絵の用語。美人や役者などの人物を胸像の構図で描いた作品。とくに顔面だけを大きく描いたものを区別して、大顔絵(おおがおえ)とよぶ説もある。その初期は、錦絵(にしきえ)が完成される以前の享保(きょうほう)年間(1716~17
36)ごろとされるが、作例はきわめて少ない。多くみられるようになるのは安永(あんえい)年間(1772~1781)ごろからで、浮世絵終焉(しゅうえん)期の明治年代に至るまで多くの絵師によって描かれた。そのなかでも、役者絵では、勝川春草(かつかわしゅんそう)をはじめとする勝川派の絵師や東洲斎写楽(とうしゅうさいしゃらく)、歌川豊国(とよくに)、歌川国政(くにまさ)などが知られ、美人画では喜多川歌麿(うたまろ)、細田栄之(えいし)、栄松斎長喜(えいしょうさいちょうき)などが名作を残している。
