A city in the southern part of Kumamoto Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1949. It occupies the basin of the Minamata River and the Yunozuru River, sandwiched between the Kunimi Mountains and the Izumi Mountains. The city center is at the mouth of the Minamata River, facing the Yatsushiro Sea, and is served by the Kyushu Shinkansen and Hisatsu Orange Railway. Since the construction of a carbide factory in 1907, it has developed into a chemical industrial city, and currently electrical equipment-related factories have also moved in. The local lumber industry is also thriving, with a plywood factory located there. Amanatsu mandarins and tea are cultivated, and Amanatsu wine is also produced. Since the 1950s, there have been many cases of Minamata disease. Tokutomi Soho and Tokutomi Roka were born here, and the Soho Memorial Museum is located here. Yunoko Onsen is located in the north, and Yunotsuru Onsen is located upstream of the Yude River. Area: 163.29 ^km2 . Population: 26,978 (2010).

熊本県南部の市。1949年市制。国見山地と出水山地にはさまれた水俣川，湯出(ゆのずる)川の流域を占める。中心市街は水俣川の河口にあって八代海に臨み，九州新幹線，肥薩おれんじ鉄道が通じる。1907年にカーバイド工場が建設されてから化学工業都市として発展し，現在は電機関連の工場も進出している。地場産業の製材業も盛んで，合板工場が立地する。甘夏ミカン・茶栽培が行われ，甘夏ワインも産する。1950年代以降水俣病が多発した。徳富蘇峰，徳冨蘆花の生地で，蘇峰記念館がある。北部に湯ノ児温泉，湯出川上流部に湯ノ鶴温泉がある。163.29km²。２万6978人（2010）。
