...The Karawamage and Tatehiyogo styles of the early Edo period are considered to be the developmental period of topknots, followed by the development of maegami and tō, and especially the tō in the middle period. Around the Jōkyō period (1684-88), a style called tabosashi was invented, which allowed for the creation of skillfully tied topknots, refined topknots with graceful curves, which were called "sekirei tō" (sekirei tail-shaped) and "kamome tō" (kamome tō) after the flying figure of a seagull.
