A city in the southern tip of Illinois, USA. Population 5,931 (1980). Located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. During the early 19th century pioneering period, the city was named after Cairo, Egypt, because its topography was thought to resemble that of the city. The southern tip of Illinois is still called "Little Egypt" today. Commerce flourished thanks to the railroad connecting it to Chicago, and during the Civil War it was the base for General Grant. Today it is known as the town of magnolias, and the Magnolia Festival is held in May. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
