Born: 1466/1470. Cuenca [died] about 1515. Spanish navigator from Haiti. He followed C. Columbus on his second voyage (1493) and discovered the gold mines of Cibao. From 1499 to 1500, he explored the Venezuelan coast from the mouth of the Orinoco River to Lake Maracaibo in the west with Amerigo Vespucci, and reached the island of Curaçao. From 1408 to 1511, he founded two colonies along the coast of Panama and northwest Colombia with D. Nicuesa.
