Wish Return - Ganmodoshi

Japanese:
Wish Return - Ganmodoshi
Originally, it was a magical act in which a third party would interpret the wishes of a person who had made a wish in life at the time of their death. It is also called 'Nan-Gashi'. Generally, it is performed by a person who is not a blood relative of the deceased, regardless of whether they had made a wish in life or not. It is considered a way for the deceased to settle their promises with the gods and wholeheartedly entrust their protection to the Buddha. Specifically, the corners of a fan are removed and thrown onto the roof, a tea bowl is smashed when the coffin is carried out, the clothes worn by the deceased in life are turned upside down and shaken, and the words 'Nan-Gashi' (the wish is answered) are loudly chanted.
