A general term for arthropods belonging to the order Opilionida of the class Arachnida. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the way they walk resembles a blind person walking while feeling around with a cane. They are also called Mekuragumo. They are distributed widely around the world, but are more common in tropical and subtropical regions. They wander under fallen leaves, fallen trees, and pebbles, among grass, and on trees. Body length is 1 to 25 mm. The anterior and posterior parts of the body are integrated, with no waist between them, and the posterior part has a jointed structure. They usually have a pair of simple eyes on the eye caruncle in front of the anterior part. The walking legs vary depending on the species, from those that are as long as the body is to them to those that are extremely long, but those that live on tree trunks and leaves and are easily noticeable often have long walking legs that are worthy of the English name daddy long-legs.
