Enoshima Shrine

It is located on Enoshima in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The three deities enshrined are Tagitsuhime-no-mikoto at Hetsumiya, Ichikishimahime-no-mikoto at Nakatsumiya, and Tagirihime-no-mikoto at Okitsumiya. In addition, Amaterasu Omikami and Susanoo-no-mikoto are enshrined at the left rear of On'iwaya, and the three aforementioned deities are enshrined at the right rear. According to the shrine's legend, it was founded during the reign of Emperor Kinmei. In ancient times, it was called Enoshima Myojin, but due to syncretism with Buddhism, it was changed to Benzaiten-jo. Known as Enoshima Benten, she is revered as the god of the sea, happiness, treasure, and arts and is one of the three great Benten in Japan, along with Itsukushima (Hiroshima Prefecture) and Chikubujima (Shiga Prefecture). The Azuma Kagami records that on April 5, 1182 (Juei 1), Minamoto no Yoritomo performed Mongaku to pray and enshrined Benzaiten on the island. During the Edo period, Tokugawa Ieyasu revered her and donated land to her. Former prefectural shrine. Annual festivals are held on the first day of the snake in April and the first day of the boar in October. The mikoshi togyo procession held at the annual festival (July 14) of the subordinate shrine Yasaka Shrine is famous.
