Sheo people (English spelling) Shē zú

Japanese: ショオ族(畲族) - ショオぞく（英語表記）Shē zú

An ethnic minority group found mainly in the southeastern coastal areas of China. They live in the mountainous and hilly regions of Ningde, Fujian, Wenzhou, Lishui, and Jinhua in Zhejiang, as well as in eastern Jiangxi, Anhui, and Guangdong. Their population was approximately 634,700 (1990). They are called She, She, (Sha), She, She, Sheke, Sheren, and Shejia, and in Fujian they are also called Shepo, She, Joutou, Shantar, and Shanke. They call themselves Shanha, Shanda, and Shanke, meaning "guests living in the mountains." Their language is a branch of the Miao-Yao branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family, and is closely related to the Hakka dialect.

中国の東南沿海地区を中心に分布する少数民族。福建省寧徳地区や浙江省温州･麗水･金華地区をはじめ，江西省東部，安徽省，広東省などの山岳･丘陵地帯に分散して居住。人口約63万4700(1990)。畲，畲，（しや），畲徭，畲客，畲人，畲家などと呼ばれ，福建省では畲婆，畲，犬頭，山韃，山客ともいう。自称は山哈，山達，山客で，〈山間に居住する客人〉という意味である。言語はシナ･チベット語族のミヤオ･ヤオ語系の一支を形成し，客家（ハツカ）方言とも近い関係にある。
