The Irish Parliament, which lasted from 1782 to 1800, exercised legislative power independently of the British Parliament under the British monarch. It was named after Henry Grattan (1746-1820), an Anglo-Irish member of parliament who was instrumental in ensuring the independence of the Irish legislature. The outbreak of the American Revolution caused economic difficulties for the Irish economy, and gradually there was an increase in movements to gain independence, such as the repeal of British trade restrictions.
