1841‐1916 Italian folklorist. Born in Palermo, Sicily, the son of a sailor. His nurse, Agatuzza Messia, who raised him as a child, was an accomplished storyteller of folklore, and in later years he collected many stories from her. As a young man, he joined the Garibaldi Expedition in 1860 and traveled to Naples. Although he aspired to become a doctor, he was interested in a wide range of fields, including history, philology, and literature, and wrote a book called "Biographies of Modern Persons" (1864) and contributed to the research journal "Civilisation Italiana" by ethnologist Angelo De Gubernatis during his student days.
