Italian folklorist. Born in Palermo, Sicily, the son of a sailor. His nurse, Agatuzza Messia, who raised him as a child, was an accomplished storyteller of folklore, and in later years he collected many stories from her. As a young man, he joined the Garibaldi Expedition in 1860 and traveled to Naples. Although he aspired to become a doctor, he was interested in a wide range of fields, including history, philology, and literature, and wrote a book called "Biographies of Modern Persons" (1864) and contributed to the research journal "Civilisation Italiana" by ethnologist Angelo De Gubernatis during his student days.

イタリアの民俗学者。シチリア島のパレルモで船員の息子として生まれた。幼いころに育てられた乳母アガトゥッツァ･メッシーアAgatuzza Messiaが巧みな民話の語り手であったため，後年，彼女の口から多量の採話を行った。青年時代には，1860年に，ガリバルディ遠征隊に加わって，ナポリまで赴いた。医学を志したが，学生時代から《現代人物評伝》(1864)を著したり，民族学者デ･グベルナーティスAngelo De Gubernatisの研究誌《イタリア文明》に寄稿したり，歴史学，文献学，文学など，さまざまな分野に関心を抱いた。
