One of the provincial government offices (tokoro) from the late Heian to the Kamakura period. Also called "Funatokoro." They surveyed, registered, and requisitioned ships, dispatched ships, handled the transport of official and sealed goods, sent imperial and official envoys such as Usa and Ise envoys, and conducted imperial visits by the emperor. In times of war, they also requisitioned military ships. There are few concrete examples, but in 1185 (Bun'ei 1), the Suo local office (Sensho Goro Masatoshi) provided several dozen ships to Minamoto no Yoshitsune's attack on Dannoura as the provincial ship magistrate, and in 1203 (Kennin 3), the Kii (Sensho Shosei and Kajitori) cut off a river boat carrying goods for various provinces, claiming to be a ferry fare for Emperor Gotoba's visit to Kumano, and the existence of shipyards has also been confirmed in Aki and Oki.
