A theory perfected by Zhu Xi of the Southern Song Dynasty in China. Inspired by the theories of Buddhist monks, Zhu Xi integrated Cheng Yi's theory of "li" and Zhang Zai's theory of "qi" to create a highly complete and grandiose system. It considers qi to be the material principle of all things and phenomena between heaven and earth, and places pure and unadulterated li as the basis of qi. All areas of cosmology, life theory, and moral theory are explained by li and qi.
