A protectorate treaty signed between France and Morocco on March 30, 1912. The sovereignty and government (mahzan) of the Sultan of Morocco were nominally retained, but real power over not only foreign affairs and military affairs but also domestic affairs was held by a governor-general appointed by the French government. Together with the Madrid Agreement of November of the same year (which determined the territories under Spanish and French rule), this treaty paved the way for the colonial rule of Morocco. It was abolished on March 2, 1956, and Morocco regained its independence. [Miyaji Kazuo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
