…Born in Liverpool, he started out as a portrait painter, but in 1754 he went to Rome, where he reaffirmed his long-held belief that “nature is superior to art,” and solidified his view of painting in which natural observation was more important than the study of ancient or Italian art. After returning to London in the 1760s, he published “Anatomy of a Horse” (1766) based on his own experience of dissecting a horse, and became popular as an animal painter. The horses he painted express the individuality of each individual horse. …
