The first confession of faith established by the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. It was compiled into 25 articles by J. Knox and others and approved by the Scottish Parliament in August 1560. Based on strict Calvinism, it emphasizes the absolute authority of the Bible, justification by faith, and the doctrine of election, and asserts that the signs of a true church are the preaching of God's word, the correct administration of the sacraments, and the adherence to church training. It states that it is the duty of secular authorities, who are God's representatives, to eliminate false beliefs and practices from the church, but makes no mention of the clergy system.
